Reflecting on the recent EANS 2025 Congress in Vienna, Austria it was a particular privilege to co-chair the vascular plenary session with outgoing EANS President Torstein R. Meling whose leadership over the past couple of years has been outstanding.

The theme of the congress was collaboration and as I listened to talks from leading figures in neurovascular surgery, interventional neuroradiology and radiosurgery amongst the many case examples presented I recognised scans of two international patients in whose care I had played a small part. It brought home how our practices reach across borders and how interactions with international colleagues is so much more frequent than ever before.
I also wanted to pay tribute to the incredible professionalism of two other colleagues. Professor Mykhailo Lovha of the Western Ukrainian Specialized Center, Lviv, Ukraine described maintaining services for children with brain tumours and even continuing an epilepsy surgery service after the largest paediatric hospital in their city was destroyed. Dr. Vadym Perepelytsia Interventional Neuroradiologist from the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital, Dnipro, Ukraine presented their large and unfortunately ever-increasing experience with penetrating vertebral injuries while showing the bombardment outside his home as he travelled to work. Their presence at the congress to share these experiences was inspiring. We can all only hope that we could find similar courage to them and their colleagues if called upon.
